The nonhuman world is full of beautiful and intricate patterns, from the nests of ants and termites to honeybee combs. These structures are resilient and adaptable. They show us that life exists at the edge of chaos and no matter how organic and adaptive they are, they all demonstrate the learnings and habits of their makers’ evolutionary pasts.
We’ve built a multispecies habitat, mostly thinking of insects which we highly depend on, using a special process that combines clay 3D printing and mycelium growth. We designed and built this artefact with an inspiration from and admiration for the tiling capacity of human skin cells. Our installation is more than just a home for bugs. It’s an example of how humans and their technologies can coexist and work together with other living organisms and their technologies in urban environments. Around it, we create a space for sensory entanglement and kin-making. We want to use this environment as a living laboratory for exploring and weaving urban interspecies relations, and a canvas for artistic research using speculative storytelling and ecopoetics.
There will be a talk presenting the design process of the symbiotic insect habitat from different angles. As we are not only minds, but first of all bodies, there will also be a sensory walk for an embodied exploration of the site and its ecosystem. Then, music.
During the sensory walk, the participants will be invited to switch perception between different factors that shape an environment and its habitable potential for different organisms. To engage the feeling surfaces and membranes of the body in a process of subjective, sensory mapping of a place. The intention is to encourage participants to become more sensitive to different qualities of the environment, and thus more attuned to different needs and obstacles.

Daphne X (she/they) is a sound designer, new media artist, and curator currently residing in Linz (Austria). In her artistic practice, which involves performance, podcast, and installation, she uses the means of sonic fiction to design and explore rituals of collective composition, speculative listening, and communal healing. Her music has been released on labels such as Exiles (HU), tssstapes (IT), and written about in Quietus, A Closer Listen, BBC3, and Bandcamp Daily. She’s exhibited and performed in festivals like Ars Electronica, Kraak and Krama (ATH, GR). She is the co-founder of Cachichi, a creative studio, curatorial platform and party series, and the host of Sonic Utopias, a sonic world-building podcast that airs monthly on Movement Radio in Athens, Greece.

Beeing, Beecoming ist ein forschungsbasiertes interdisziplinäres Projekt mit dem Ziel, die Beziehungen zwischen den Arten zu erforschen, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf bestäubenden Insekten liegt. Es ist ein Prozess des Entwerfens, Bauens, Wohnens und Zerlegens, der sich vom Frühling bis zum Herbst erstreckt. Durch insektenorientiertes algorithmisches Design, 3D-Druck mit Ton sowie den Anbau und die Zusammensetzung natürlicher Materialien wird im Club Hybrid ein Insektenlebensraum eingerichtet. Die Skulptur selbst ist eine lebende Struktur und eignet sich zum Nisten verschiedener Arten von Wildbienen und anderen Insekten. Es verändert sich unter dem Einfluss von Insekten, Pilzen, Tieren, Feuchtigkeit, Regen, Sonnenlicht usw. und erodiert und zersetzt sich allmählich.
Während der gesamten Präsenzzeit dieses Insektenlebensraums sind Besucher eingeladen, den Prozess zu beobachten und durch die Durchführung minimalistischer Partituren, die vor Ort verfügbar sind, mitzumachen. Die Partituren bieten Übungen zur verkörperten Kognition, indem sie individuelle Darbietungen vorschlagen, die versuchen, Aufmerksamkeit, Wahrnehmung und Vorstellungskraft von unseren anthropozentrischen Alltagsmustern abzulenken. Der Club Hybrid wird mehrere Veranstaltungen zur Präsentation des Projekts veranstalten, darunter Musik und Performance (Termine folgen in Kürze).
